There are three considerations when looking to size a TV appropriately for a room.
- Aesthetics. Lets face it we don’t want to take over the look of a room with nothing but a TV. Unless of course your building a dedicated theater. For most of us this is not the case so we have to consider what visual impact the TV will have.
- Room size and where the TV will be installed. If the desire is to hide the TV we often will place it in a cabinet or behind art work or mirrors. If this is the case often times the size limitation is brought on by the physical structure and less by whats best for viewing
- Viewing angle. Here is where most people are shocked. THX specifies a minimum of 26 and recommends 36. We find that max is about 38-40. All of these are not measured in inches but rather by viewing angles. The closer you sit the small the set can be while maintaining these numbers. So get out your tape measure and find out how far back you sit from where the TV will be installed. Our recommendation is to go as large as you can without exceeding 38 degrees. We would also like to mention that going to small for aesthetic or room size considerations can cause issues. We have seen peple install small sets too far away in a bedroom for example and have had to replace them with larger sets because our client could not read the guide information from the cable company.
